Collection: Hemlock Plugs
- Eastern Hemlock Trees, scientifically known as *Tsuga canadensis*, are coniferous species native to eastern North America. They are known for their graceful, drooping branches and fine, feathery needles. Eastern hemlocks are typically found in cool, moist environments such as shaded ravines, north-facing slopes, and along streams.
- Needles: The needles are short, flat, and dark green with two white lines on the underside. They are arranged in a flat, horizontal plane along the branches.
- Bark: The bark of mature trees is deeply furrowed and reddish-brown, providing a distinctive texture.
- Cones: Eastern hemlocks produce small, pendant cones about 1 to 2 centimeters long. These cones mature in the fall and release seeds.
- Growth: These trees can grow quite large, reaching heights of 60 to 70 feet, with some specimens exceeding 100 feet. They have a slow growth rate and can live for several hundred years.
- Ecological Importance: Eastern hemlocks play a crucial role in their ecosystems by providing habitat and food for various wildlife species. They also help maintain the cool, moist micro-climates of the forests they inhabit.
