Collection: Peony Plants
- Types and Varieties: Peonies are generally divided into three main types: herbaceous peonies, tree peonies, and intersectional (Itoh) peonies. Herbaceous peonies die back to the ground each winter, tree peonies have woody stems that remain above ground year-round, and intersectional peonies are hybrids that combine features of both.
- Growing Conditions: Peonies thrive in well-drained soil and prefer full sun, although they can tolerate partial shade. They are hardy plants that can survive in a range of climates, but they do best in areas with cold winters, which help to set the buds for the next season.
- Planting and Care: Peonies should be planted in the fall, with the eyes (buds) of the tubers placed about 1-2 inches below the soil surface. They require minimal maintenance once established, but benefit from regular watering during dry spells and a layer of mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Blooming Season: Peonies typically bloom in late spring to early summer, with the exact timing depending on the variety and local climate. The flowers can be single, semi-double, or double, and come in a range of colors including white, pink, red, and yellow.
- Longevity and Uses: Peonies are long-lived plants, often thriving for decades with little care. They are popular in gardens for their ornamental value and are also commonly used in floral arrangements due to their striking appearance and fragrance.
