Introduced in 1937 by Hans P. Sass, the Sea Shell peony is a celebrated herbaceous perennial that earned the prestigious American Peony Society Gold Medal in 1990. This mid-season bloomer is distinguished by its large, single flowers featuring satiny, ballerina-pink petals that encircle a vibrant center of golden-yellow stamens. Reaching approximately 36 to 37 inches tall, the plant is valued for its strong, upright stems that typically do not require staking, making it an excellent choice for both garden borders and fresh-cut floral arrangements. Beyond its visual elegance, the Sea Shell variety is known for being hardy and vigorous, thriving in full sun and well-drained soil while maintaining attractive, glossy green foliage throughout the growing season.
