American Sycamore (Platanus occidentalis)

The American sycamore, also known as the buttonwood or American planetree, is one of the largest deciduous trees in North America and a popular choice for large landscapes due to its rapid growth and distinctive appearance.

Appearance Its most notable feature is the mottled, exfoliating bark, which peels off in irregular patches to reveal a smooth, pale inner bark that can be white, tan, or green. This unique camouflage pattern makes the tree easy to identify year-round. It has a broad, irregular crown and large, maple-like leaves that turn yellow in the fall.

Size and Growth The tree is fast-growing, often adding several feet of height per year, and can reach mature heights of 75 to 100 feet (23-30 m) or more with a wide spread.

Habitat It thrives in moist, rich soils, commonly found along streams, rivers, and in floodplains. It is also remarkably tolerant of urban conditions, including pollution and compacted soils, making it an ideal urban street tree in appropriate spaces.

Fruit It produces spherical, burr-like fruit balls (also called ""buttonballs"") that hang from the branches on long stalks and often persist through the winter before breaking apart in the spring to disperse seeds. "
