The river birch (Betula nigra) is a medium to large, fast-growing deciduous tree native to the eastern United States, widely popular in landscaping for its distinctive peeling, multi-colored bark and adaptability to wet soils. It is the most heat-tolerant and borer-resistant birch, making it a good choice for warmer climates where other birch species struggle.

Bark: The most notable feature is the bark, which peels in thin, papery, curling layers, revealing inner bark in shades of salmon-pink, tan, cinnamon, and cream, providing year-round visual interest.

Size & Shape: It typically grows 40 to 70 feet tall with a spread of 40 to 60 feet. Young trees have a pyramidal shape, which matures into a more rounded or irregular crown.

Foliage: The leaves are alternate, diamond-shaped with doubly-toothed margins, and bright to dark green, turning golden yellow in the fall.

Habitat & Soil: As its name suggests, it naturally grows along riverbanks and in swampy bottomlands, preferring moist, acidic soils. It is highly adaptable to a range of soil conditions, including heavy clay and occasional drought once established.

Growth Rate: It is a fast-growing tree, often adding 2 to 3 feet in height each year.
