The red maple (Acer rubrum) is one of the most common and widespread deciduous trees in eastern North America, highly valued for its striking red color in all seasons and adaptability to a wide range of soil and climate conditions.

Key Characteristics

Size: Typically grows 40 to 90 feet tall with a rounded or oval crown.

Leaves: Simple, opposite, with 3 to 5 lobes and irregularly toothed edges. They are green in summer and turn brilliant shades of red, orange, or yellow in the fall.

Flowers and Fruit: Small, reddish flowers appear in early spring before the leaves. These are followed by small, winged, reddish seeds called samaras (or "spinners") that ripen and disperse in late spring or early summer.

Bark: Smooth and light gray when young, becoming dark gray, ridged, and scaly as it matures.

Habitat and Growing Conditions
The red maple is exceptionally adaptable, thriving in a wider variety of site conditions than almost any other forest species in North America.

Sunlight: Prefers full sun to partial shade (at least 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight daily).

Soil: It grows well in both very wet, swampy areas and drier upland soils, from acidic to neutral pH.

Hardiness Zones: It is hardy in USDA zones 3 through 9.

Uses and Considerations

Landscaping: Due to its fast growth rate and reliable, vibrant fall color, it is a popular shade and ornamental tree for yards, parks, and streets.

Wildlife: The samaras provide food for squirrels and birds, while deer and rabbits eat the tender shoots and leaves. It is a larval host for several moths, including the rosy maple moth.

Wood Products: Known in the lumber industry as "soft maple," its wood is used for furniture, flooring, and cabinetry.
