Butternut: (Juglans cinerea), also known as the white walnut, is a valuable deciduous hardwood native to eastern North America, cherished for its sweet, buttery nuts and attractive light-colored wood. Typically reaching heights of 40 to 60 feet, it features a broad, spreading crown and distinctive light gray bark that showcases unique diamond-patterned ridges. Its large, pinnately compound leaves can be recognized by their sticky central stalks and the tree's stout twigs, which have a chocolate-brown pith and exhibit a distinct "monkey face" appearance above the leaf scar. However, the butternut is facing a severe decline due to the devastating butternut canker disease, which has led to its status as an endangered species in many regions. Despite this, the tree thrives in full sun and well-drained soils and is pollinated by nearby butternuts or black walnuts, producing edible nuts highly sought after for baking and traditional recipes. Additionally, Native Americans and early settlers have historically utilized various parts of this tree for food, dye, and medicine. However, care must be taken due to juglone toxicity, which can affect the growth of certain plants in proximity to the tree.
