Mountain Ash: AKA Rowan (Sorbus americana), is a small tree celebrated for its white spring flowers, vibrant red or orange autumn berries, and striking fall foliage. Typically growing between 10 to 30 feet tall, though it can reach up to 40 feet, it produces clusters of small white flowers in late spring or early summer, followed by bright berries that ripen in autumn and often persist into winter. Its compound leaves are composed of several smaller leaflets, and during the fall, the foliage transforms into shades of yellow, orange, and reddish-purple, giving the tree an attractive appearance. The berries serve as a food source for various bird species, including waxwings, thrushes, and jays, as well as small mammals, and have medicinal properties used in herbal medicine for their anti-inflammatory effects. Additionally, some varieties can be processed into jelly, wine, or sauce, making the mountain ash a popular ornamental tree in colder climates due to its aesthetic appeal. Rich in cultural folklore, mountain ash symbolizes protection from evil spirits and has been associated with charms and amulets. In Norse mythology, the god Thor used a rowan tree for protection against a giantess. The tree is relatively low-maintenance but requires occasional watering during dry spells, especially when young. Pruning should be done after flowering or in winter, with care taken to avoid disturbing nesting birds during the growing season.
