Nannyberry: (Viburnum lentago) is a versatile large shrub or small tree, reaching heights of 15 to 18 feet, and occasionally up to 30 feet. Known for its creamy-white, five-petaled flowers that bloom in flat-topped clusters during spring, it produces bluish-black drupes that begin as green and may show pink or yellow tinges before maturing. These edible fruits, which have a sweet, prune-like flavor often described as reminiscent of raisins with hints of holiday spice, are best harvested after a frost for optimal taste. The plant is highly adaptable, thriving in both sunny and shaded areas, as well as in dry or moist soils, making it a durable choice for various landscapes. While it is not deer-resistant, it serves as a valuable food source for deer, birds, and other wildlife. Historically, Indigenous peoples utilized different parts of the plant for medicinal purposes, treating ailments such as urinary issues, measles, and easing vomiting. Additionally, the sweet berries can be enjoyed raw or incorporated into jams, jellies, preserves, smoothies, pies, and baked goods. At the same time, its ornamental value is highlighted by the attractive spring flowers and substantial size.
