Ninebark: (Physocarpus opulifolius) is a fast-growing, adaptable native shrub that stands out for its attractive, peeling bark and seasonal interest. This shrub typically reaches heights and widths of 4 to 8 feet, boasting a life expectancy of approximately 30 years, with 1 to 2 feet of growth added each year in ideal conditions. In late spring, ninebark produces clusters of white or pinkish flowers that mature into colorful seed heads, providing visual appeal. Many cultivars exhibit vibrant foliage in shades of green, deep purple, red, and gold. Ninebark is highly versatile, thriving in a wide range of conditions, from full sun to partial shade, and across various soil types, including clay and loam. It is drought-tolerant and generally requires low water once established. Additionally, ninebark is hardy, typically not needing winter protection, although a thick layer of mulch can offer extra insulation in colder zones. Maintenance includes regular pruning to remove dead growth, particularly after seven or eight years. Native to North America, ninebark also supports a variety of wildlife, including butterflies and moths, making it a valuable addition to landscapes.
