American Plum: (Prunus americana) is a versatile native tree or large shrub recognized for its striking spring white flowers and edible, tart red or yellow fruit. Often growing in dense, thorny thickets due to root suckers, it can reach heights of 10 to 25 feet depending on growing conditions. The young bark is smooth with prominent lenticels, while older bark becomes flaky, resembling black cherry bark. The leaves are simple, alternate, and sharply toothed, and the showy white flowers bloom in early spring before the leaves emerge. The fruit, approximately 1 inch long, ripens to a reddish-purple or yellow color, featuring a tart skin and sweet, juicy flesh. This species thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade and is adaptable to various soil types, including moist, well-drained, and sandy soils, making it hardy in USDA zones 3-8. Regular late winter pruning helps manage its shape and boost fruit production. The American Plum is highly beneficial for wildlife, attracting pollinators and offering nesting sites and cover for small mammals and birds; deer also browse its leaves and twigs. Its edible fruit is delightful for fresh consumption, as well as for making jams, jellies, pies, and fruit leather, while the tree provides a beautiful display of flowers in spring and vibrant colors in the fall.
