Pussy Willow: (Salix discolor) is a fast-growing shrub or small tree recognized for their fuzzy, silvery-gray catkins that emerge in early spring before the leaves. These plants are ecologically significant, providing crucial food sources for early pollinators, such as bees and butterflies, and some birds use their silky hairs for nesting. Thriving in moist, sunny locations within USDA hardiness zones 4-8, pussy willows are often favored as ornamental plants for indoor arrangements, hedges, or rain gardens. Characterized by their distinctive catkins—actually flowers protected by a layer of hairs that survive cold temperatures—these plants can grow as multi-stemmed shrubs or small trees, reaching heights of 6 to 25 feet. With long, narrow leaves that are green on top and pale underneath, they require full sun and well-drained, consistently damp soil. To promote vigorous growth and maintain size, heavy pruning is recommended every few years.
