Meadow Rose: (Rosa blanda) is a charming plant characterized by its single, five-petaled flowers that bloom in shades of pink or white, adorned with prominent yellow stamens. This wild rose typically blooms in the summer, with some varieties known as "Early Wild Rose" for their earlier flowering. The foliage features lower stems that may have prickles, while younger growth is smooth. In the fall, it produces bright red, edible rose hips that serve as a food source for birds. Meadow Rose grows to about 3–4 feet tall and spreads via rhizomes to form patches or colonies, thriving in prairies, meadows, and open woods across the upper Midwest and Northeast United States. It is adaptable to a variety of conditions, including sandy and well-drained soils, and is drought-tolerant once established. This plant attracts pollinators, offers seeds and fruit for wildlife, and serves as a host for certain moths, all while requiring very low maintenance and exhibiting disease resistance. Pruning in early spring helps maintain its health and can be used to naturalize large areas, create low hedges, or provide cut flowers.
