Pasture Rose: (Rosa carolina) is a native shrub recognized for its fragrant pink flowers that bloom in early summer and its bright red rose hips in the fall. Typically growing between 2 to 4 feet tall, it can occasionally reach up to 6 feet, with a spread of 3 to 5 feet. This hardy, low-maintenance plant thrives in full sun but also tolerates partial shade and a variety of soil conditions, preferring well-drained soil with a pH between 6 and 8.5. It produces single pink flowers from May to July, followed by nutritious rose hips that provide food for birds. The pasture rose attracts pollinators such as bees and butterflies, making it valuable for wildlife, while its thorny branches offer cover. It is suitable for use in pollinator gardens, borders, or as a natural screen or hedge, and its ability to spread via suckers makes it effective for erosion control in naturalized areas. Generally, it requires little pruning; shaping can be done if desired. Avoid deadheading to allow rose hips to form. While somewhat drought-tolerant, regular watering is necessary during establishment, and care should be taken to apply fungicide if fungal issues arise.
