Downy Serviceberry: (Amelanchier arborea)is a small tree or large shrub cherished for its year-round ornamental appeal, edible fruit, and significant value to wildlife. It typically grows between 15 and 30 feet tall and can thrive as a multi-stemmed shrub or be shaped into a small tree. In early spring, it showcases white, five-petaled flowers in drooping clusters, which are pollinated by bees and other insects. By summer, it produces small, round, reddish-purple fruit that resembles blueberries in size and color, providing a sweet or sweet-tart flavor favored by birds. Its leaves, with a downy, fuzzy underside, turn brilliant shades of yellow, orange, or red in the fall. The bark of the young tree is smooth and light gray, becoming darker with shallow grooves as it ages. Native to eastern North America, from Southeastern Canada to Florida and Louisiana, the Downy serviceberry prefers moist, well-drained, acidic soils, though it is adaptable to various soil types and can grow in full sun or partial shade. As a low-maintenance tree, it may require attention to root suckers to prevent it from growing as a shrub. While it is partially self-fertile, better fruit production can be achieved by planting two genetically distinct serviceberry trees nearby. This tree serves as a valuable food source for local wildlife, including birds, squirrels, and bears, making it an excellent choice for landscaping as a specimen tree or in naturalized areas. It is often recommended as a strong substitute for the Bradford pear tree.
