- Description: The balsam fir is a medium-sized evergreen tree that typically grows to a height of 14 to 20 meters (about 46 to 66 feet). It has a narrow, conical shape with a pointed top. The bark is smooth and grayish-brown, often with resin blisters.
- Leaves: The leaves are needle-like, flat, and typically 1.5 to 3 centimeters long. They are dark green on the top and have two white stomatal bands on the underside.
- Cones: The balsam fir produces upright cones that are 5 to 10 centimeters long. The cones are initially purple and mature to a brown color. They disintegrate to release seeds in the fall.
- Habitat: This tree prefers cool, moist environments and is often found in boreal forests. It thrives in well-drained, acidic soils.
- Uses: Balsam fir is commonly used as a Christmas tree due to its pleasant fragrance and symmetrical shape. The tree's wood is also used for pulpwood and light construction. Additionally, the resin from balsam fir is used in traditional medicine and as a component in certain products like Canada balsam.
