  • Species and Distribution: Basswood trees are native to the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, including North America, Europe, and Asia. The American basswood (Tilia americana) is the most common species in North America.
  • Physical Characteristics: Basswood trees can grow quite large, often reaching heights of 60 to 80 feet (18 to 24 meters) with a trunk diameter of 2 to 3 feet (0.6 to 0.9 meters). They have a broad, rounded crown and heart-shaped leaves with serrated edges. The leaves are typically large, measuring 4 to 8 inches (10 to 20 cm).
  • Flowers and Fruit: Basswood trees produce small, fragrant, yellowish-white flowers that bloom in clusters during the early summer. These flowers are beautiful to bees and are a significant source of nectar for honey production. The fruit of the basswood is a small, round, nut-like capsule.
  • Wood Characteristics and Uses: Basswood wood is light, soft, and quickly worked, making it popular for carving, woodworking, and producing musical instruments, such as guitars and pianos. It is also used for making furniture, veneer, and pulpwood.
  • Cultural and Ecological Importance: Basswood trees are valued for their shade and ornamental qualities in urban and rural landscapes. They also play an important ecological role by providing habitat and food for various wildlife species.
