Mitella diphylla, or Bishop's Cap, is a perennial wildflower native to Michigan and the UP. It is a plant that favors rich deciduous woodlands, adding attractive leaves and unique, dainty, spring flower spikes. Although it prefers shade and rich forest loam, it will tolerate part shade and medium-moist to medium-dry soil. Blooms with a string of tiny white blossoms in early spring, between April and June. This is a cutie! The sprays of flowers give a frothy, airy feel to shaded areas.
This is a favorite plant of several small native bees and pollinating Syrphid flies. Foliage is usually under a foot tall, with flower spikes that may reach 18 inches.
