- Description: Black willow is a medium to large deciduous tree that can grow up to 30-50 feet tall, with some specimens reaching up to 100 feet. It has a narrow, irregular crown and a trunk that can be quite large in diameter. The bark is dark brown to black, deeply furrowed, and scaly.
- Leaves: The leaves of the black willow are narrow, lance-shaped, and finely serrated along the edges. They are typically 3 to 6 inches long and have a bright green color on the upper side, with a paler underside.
- Habitat: Black willow commonly grows in wet environments such as riverbanks, floodplains, and swamps. It is well-adapted to moist soils and can often be found in areas that are periodically flooded.
- Uses: Historically, black willow has been used for various purposes. The wood is lightweight and has been used for making furniture, crates, and other items. Additionally, the bark contains salicylic acid, which is a precursor to aspirin, and has been used in traditional medicine for its pain-relieving properties.
- Ecological Importance: Black willow plays a significant role in its ecosystem. It helps stabilize soil and prevent erosion along waterways. The tree also provides habitat and food for various wildlife species, including birds and insects.
