Aquilegia canadensis, also known as Wild Columbine, is a perennial wildflower native to Michigan and the UP.
Plant reaches 2-3 feet tall and flowers from April to June with a red/yellow blossom. It's unique flower shape and natural red color are attractive to pollinators and hummingbirds. This is the host plant for the Columbine Duskywing, a spreadwing skipper that is rich brown in color with spotted wings. iNaturalist observations indicate that this butterfly is present in the UP.

Although its preference is for part sun and medium loam, Columbine adapts from full sun to full shade, medium to dry soil and will grow in muck, clay, loam or sand. Columbine will grow in shallow and rocky soils and is great for rock gardens or cracks in glacial rocks.
