- Appearance: Late lilac is a deciduous shrub typically growing 6 to 12 feet (1.8 to 3.6 meters). It has a rounded shape with dense foliage. The leaves are ovate to lanceolate, dark green, and can be up to 6 inches (15 cm) long.
- Flowers: The plant is known for its fragrant, tubular flowers, which bloom later in the common lilacs (Syringa vulgaris), usually in late spring to early summer. The flowers are typically pink to dark pink to baby pink in color and are arranged in large, conical clusters called panicles.
- Cultivation: Late lilac is relatively easy to grow and is hardy in USDA zones 3 to 7. It prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. It is also tolerant of various seasons, more so than soil types, including clay and loam. Regular pruning after flowering can help maintain its shape and encourage more prolific blooming.
- Uses: This plant is often used in landscaping for its ornamental value, particularly its attractive and fragrant flowers. It can be planted as a specimen shrub, in mixed borders, or as part of a hedge.
- Care: To ensure healthy growth, the plant must be watered regularly, especially during dry periods. Mulching around the base can help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Fertilizing with a balanced fertilizer in early spring can also promote vigorous growth and flowering.
