- Appearance: River birch is known for its distinctive bark, which peels away in papery layers, revealing a range of colors from creamy white to salmon-pink and cinnamon-brown. This feature makes it a popular ornamental tree.
- Size: It is a medium to large deciduous tree, typically growing to a height of 40 to 70 feet and a spread of 40 to 60 feet. When young, it has a pyramidal to oval shape that becomes more rounded with age.
- Leaves: The river birch leaves are simple, alternate, and ovate with a serrated margin. They are dark green in the summer and turn yellow in the fall.
- Habitat: As its name suggests, river birch thrives in moist environments. It is often found along streams and rivers and in floodplains. Once established, it is tolerant of wet soils and can also adapt to drier conditions.
- Growth Conditions: River birch prefers full sun to partial shade and can grow in various soil types, though it does best in acidic, moist, and well-drained soils. It is also resistant to birch borer, a common pest of other birch species.
- Uses: Due to its attractive bark and adaptability, river birch is often used in landscaping and as a shade tree. It is also valued for stabilizing soil and preventing erosion along waterways.
- Wildlife: The tree provides habitat and food for various wildlife. Birds and small mammals may use the tree for nesting, and birds consume its seeds.
