Carex pensylvanica, also known as Pennsylvania sedge, is a perennial grass-like sedge native to Michigan. It has fine leaves, is naturally short, and has interesting flower structures in spring that are tinged with purple and white.
Plant reaches 8 to 12 inches tall and thrives and blooms in cool weather and sandy soil.
It tolerates full sun to full shade, medium to dry soil and will grow in clay, loam or sand, put it prefers well-drained soil and dappled shade. This plant loves living under jack pine, red pine, and oak. Makes a good grass alternative or ground cover.
