- Description: The sugar maple is a large tree, typically growing to heights of 25–35 meters (82–115 feet) with a trunk diameter of 75–100 centimeters (30–40 inches). It has a dense crown with a rounded shape. The leaves are deciduous, opposite, and palmately lobed with five lobes. In the fall, the leaves turn vibrant shades of yellow, orange, and red.
- Habitat: Sugar maples thrive in well-drained, fertile soils and are commonly found in mixed hardwood forests. They prefer cooler climates and are most abundant in the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada.
- Maple Syrup Production: The sugar maple is renowned for its sap, which is high in sugar content. The sap is collected and boiled in early spring to produce maple syrup. It takes about 40 liters (10 gallons) of sap to make 1 liter (1 quart) of syrup.
- Ecological Importance: Sugar maples play a crucial role in their ecosystems. They provide habitat and food for various wildlife species. The trees also contribute to the forest canopy, influencing the microclimate and soil conditions.
- Wood Uses: The wood of the sugar maple is hard and dense, making it valuable for furniture, flooring, and musical instruments. Due to its durability, it is also used to make bowling alleys and basketball courts.
