  • Habitat and Distribution: Swamp white oak is commonly found in lowland areas, such as swamps, floodplains, and along streams and rivers. It is native to the eastern and central United States and southeastern Canada.
  • Physical Characteristics: This tree can grow to a height of 60 to 80 feet, with a spread of 50 to 60 feet. It has a broad, rounded crown and a trunk that can be pretty stout. The bark is grayish-brown and becomes deeply ridged and furrowed with age.
  • Leaves and Acorns: The leaves of the swamp white oak are simple and alternate and have a distinctive bicolor appearance—dark green on top and silvery-white underneath. In the fall, the leaves turn shades of yellow and brown. The tree produces acorns, which are an essential food source for wildlife.
  • Ecological Importance: Swamp white oak provides habitat and food for various wildlife species, including birds, mammals, and insects. Deer, squirrels, and other small mammals particularly favor its acorns.
  • Uses: Swamp white oak wood is strong and durable, making it valuable for furniture, flooring, and construction. Due to its adaptability to wet conditions, it is also used in landscaping and restoration projects.
  • Conservation and Management: While not currently considered endangered, swamp white oak faces threats from habitat loss and changes in water management. Conservation efforts focus on protecting its natural habitats and promoting sustainable forestry practices.
